I grew up in western Massachusetts with my nose stuck in a book. This caused me to occasionally walk into things and forced my mother to institute a "no reading at the dinner table" rule. I majored in English at Northeastern University and then, because there were a lot more books I wanted to read, went on to earn Masters and PhD degrees at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

I started my career as a medievalist, specializing in saints' lives, and had fun teaching courses that included Old English,  Chaucer, medieval pilgrmage, and Arthurian legend. I've taught students from high school through graduate school at institutions such as Brown, Auburn University, Fisher College, Merrimack College, Endicott College, Phillips Academy, and others. I lived in London for several years (and could have happily stayed there forever).

Besides teaching, I've built a career as a freelance writer and editor. I'm the author of numerous how-to and reference books on topics ranging from buying and selling on eBay to classical mythology to green living to using Microsoft Office. I'm also the author of a mystery and the Deadtown urban fantasy series (the sixth and final book in the series was published in 2017). Other writing-related jobs I've held include technical writing, developmental editing, copyediting, and corporate training in business and technical writing.

When I'm not working, I enjoy hiking, travel (I walked the 500-mile Camino de Santiago across northern Spain in 2014), staying in touch with my daughter (who lives too far away in Los Angeles), and listening obsessively to opera. There are still a lot of books I want to read.
