Douglas A. Avery retired in June 2011 as Director of Choruses at Mynderse Academy in Seneca Falls, New York, where he taught for thirty-five years. He conducted the Mynderse Academy Chamber Singers, Varsity Chorus, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, and the 7th & 8th Grade Chorus. He also directed the school’s plays and musicals.
Mr. Avery is currently a lecturer at Ithaca College and an adjunct instructor at Hobart & William Smith Colleges. In the past he has served IC as director of the Vocal Jazz Ensemble and coordinator of student teacher placement in addition to being a full-time faculty member during the 2015-16 school year.
Mr. Avery has served the New York State School Music Association as the chairperson of the All-State Choruses and the All-State Vocal Jazz Ensemble. He adjudicates vocal and vocal jazz solos at NYSSMA festivals. He has guest-conducted numerous high school and middle school All-County and Area All-State choruses throughout central New York. He is a recipient of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra’s Outstanding Choral Music Educator Award and the New York State School Music Association’s Distinguished Service Award.
Mr. Avery is a lifetime member of the American Choral Directors Association, for which he served two terms as New York State Repertoire and Standards Chairman for Middle School Choruses.
Mr. Avery is the Director of Music at Trinity Episcopal Church in Seneca Falls, and serves as cantor for three Catholic churches in Auburn. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music and a Master of Music degree from Ithaca College.
