Other Interests

My academic interests merge with my personal interests. I just finished serving on the Council of the "Animals & Society" section of the American Sociological Association. We worked to enhance public understanding of the multiple intersections of animals and human animals ("society"). It's fantastically interdisciplinary.

Currently, I serve on the Council of the "Bodies and Embodiment" section of the American Sociological Association. It's also fantastically interdisciplinary.

In college I had a hard time choosing a direction because I was interested in many things - photography, journalism, documentary film, philosophy, and public health. In fact, I got into college based on my photography, and I remain steadfastly more interested in film photography than digital photography. Some day, if I am lucky, I would love to work with students to do visual sociology - documentaries even. Luckily, my junior high and high school interest in sports and all things sport-related has died down; I spent a lot of time watching sports on TV.

I'm also interested in the paranormal or "supernatural," celebreality, vegan stuff, video games (but old style - in what we used to call the arcade, at the mall), cosmetics, fine art, and "true crime." My house contains old photos, paper ephemera (others' love letters and the like), books from the '50s, and 1950s furniture.

I also partner dance - Lindy hop (swing) and Balboa, a close-embrace, fast dance. Both dances are fascinating kinesthetically, musically, and in terms of gender and sexuality.
