Non-Thesis Students
As a non-thesis student, you must pass the comprehensive exam. You may take comps after the successful completion of all coursework (provided you are not on academic probation). Comps is a three part exam covering (1) Leadership, (2) Statistics and Research Methods, and (3) your Concentration area (sport psych, ex phys, or human performance). The concentration area test and the stats/research methods test are each three hours long, the leadership test is one hour. In general, you will be expected to demonstrate:
analytic and problem solving skills.
the ability to apply principles and generalizations already learned to new problems and situations.
the ability to draw reasonable inferences from observations.
the ability to synthesize and integrate information and ideas.
the ability to think holistically: to see the whole as well as the parts.
the ability to distinguish between fact and opinion.
an understanding of terminology and concepts.
skill in using materials, tools, and technology central to this subject.
an understanding of techniques and methods used to gain new knowledge.
a capacity to make informed decisions.
