Professor Garland's interests are in the general area of communication theory, critical and cultural studies, and research methodology. Her present work emphasizes the role of everyday interaction in shaping the professional and social identities of organizational actors, specifically as it bolsters the power relationship embedded in paid labor.

One major stream in her research concerns practices of organizing in healthcare settings, and how these practices are tied to institutionalized identities. For example, she has used discourse analysis to examine the training materials used to increase the novice physician's awareness of cultural difference in interaction; narrative analysis stemming from in-depth interviews to understand the gender discourses embedded in nurses' constructions of quality care; and combination of ethnographic and ethnomethodological methods to study health professionals' development of professional identity vis-a-vis cross-cultural encounters.

Outside of the health care arena, she has also written on women's reactions to gender-specific communication skills training; popular representations of work and parenting; and the role of the built environment as both a component of interaction and as a mechanism for power in organizations.

When not in class (or library!), Dr. Garland serves the college Co-Chair of the President's Advisory Committee on Diversity, and is a founding member of the Program in Culture and Communication.
