Course Description:
Information is provided about development of normal and disordered communication in children from 3 to 21 years of age. Course includes material regarding important theories, legislation, service delivery models, assessment, remediation, literacy, and specific populations of special needs children. 3 credits.
Selected Learner Outcomes
By the end of this course, students should be able to:
• Describe language impairment in parent-friendly terms
• Describe the types of tasks used to assess a child’s language content, form, and use at different age levels
• Describe various subtests and a child’s performance on each subtest, using parent-friendly wording appropriate for a dx report
• Explain the relationships among scores provided on a test and determine a child’s eligibility for services
• Describe age appropriate informal assessment methods
• Describe intervention methods appropriate for different age levels
• Create portions of a language lesson by applying specific intervention methods to age appropriate materials at different age levels
• Describe a variety of learning strategies
• Research selected disorders; describe the etiology of the disorder and primary characteristics; explain and justify appropriate therapy techniques
