Hi, there -

Organizational communication is the discipline with which I most identify, and I particularly enjoy assisting students in their exploration of the human side of communication. Through the clutter of media technologies it is sometimes easy to lose track of what communication is—people sharing knowledge with other people, seeking to find the common “sense” of the world in which we live.

Along with the integration of theory and practice, the CMD undergraduate mission emphasizes the interdisciplinary nature of its programs, so that graduates can enact a broad range of responsibilities relating to communication.

Having been educated by this department myself, I somewhat personify this generalist commitment. For example, in my business, I am called upon to wear many hats, including: project manager, instructional designer, CAL scriptwriter, technical writer, public relations practitioner, customer service representative, and crisis manager. Since I am not particularly adept in some areas, I learned to call on the knowledge and skills of talented specialists in programming and graphic design to complete technical aspects of projects and assist in problem solving. To me, this is an important aspect of the CMD perspective—flexibility.
