Students in my lab are engineering a metalloenzyme using HmuT, a heme transporter from Yersinia pestis, as a starting point.  HmuT binds two hemes in close proximity, and we are using metal substitution and site-directed mutagenesis to design an artificial metalloenzyme that catalyzes important reactions for fuel cell technology, such as oxygen reduction or hydrogen evolution.  The end goal is to explore the impact of structural and electronic changes of the metal environment on its catalytic properties.
