George H. Smith received his Bachelor of Music in music education from the Ithaca College School of Music.  From 1971-75, Mr. Smith was a saxophonist with the United States Navy Band, Washington, D.C.  As a member of the U.S.Navy’s premier band, he performed at the White House and numerous official functions including the inauguration of president Richard Nixon, as well as the annual national tour made by the band.  He completed the Master of Music degree in saxophone performance from the Catholic University of America in 1975.

George began his teaching career at Groton Central School in 1975.  From 1977 until 2007, he was on the instrumental music faculty at Bethlehem Central Middle School in Delmar, New York where he conducted concert bands, jazz ensemble and taught instrumental lessons.  He also served as interim district music supervisor for the Bethlehem Central School District from January – March 2001.  Mr. Smith has also been on the faculty and staff of the Interlochen Arts Camp at Interlochen, Michigan for thirteen summers, serving as Stage Manager, All-State Saxophone Instructor and Administrative Coordinator.

Since 1992, George has been on the Executive Board of NYSBDA.  In 1995, he chaired the first NYSBDA Middle School Honor Band and served in that capacity until 1999.  He has also served the organization as First Vice President, President, Past President and is now on the NYSBDA Advisory Board.  In addition to NYSBDA, he is also active in NYSSMA serving on the NYSSMA Executive Council as Adjudication Festival Chairperson as well as being a certified All-State Woodwind Adjudicator and Major Organization Adjudicator.
