Dr. D. Kim Dunnick

Kim Dunnick has been a guest clinician, recitalist, and soloist with orchestras and wind ensembles on five continents.  He has adjudicated international competitions in Moscow, Kiev, and Washington DC.  A former member of The U.S. Army Band, Washington, DC (including the Ceremonial Band, the Herald Trumpets, and the Army Blues jazz band), the Knoxville Symphony, the Elmira Symphony, and the Brasswind quintet, he was the principal trumpet for many years with the Victoria Bach Festival (Texas), and the Skaneateles Festival Orchestra (New York).

Students of Professor Dunnick have been accepted for graduate work at prestigious graduate programs including Indiana, Michigan, Yale, Eastman, New England Conservatory, Boston University, and the Colburn School in Los Angeles.   Several have won positions with the special service bands, including the prestigious DC armed forces bands, and some have positions teaching trumpet in universities.

On three occasions over the past years, Dr. Dunnick has taken an IC student brass quintet to the Haus Marteau brass course in Lichtenberg, Germany as a scholarship ensemble.  His students have been finalists in major competitions, and one was a winner in the National Trumpet Competition in Washington DC.  Recently, an undergraduate trumpet ensemble made the finals of the NTC ensemble division, placing fourth in a competition where many of the ensembles were mostly or exclusively comprised of graduate students.

Currently, Dunnick is principal trumpet with the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra and a founding member of Troica, a trio with colleagues Stephen Mauk, saxophone and Diane Birr, piano.  Troica has premiered ten compositions written for them since its founding in 2000, and has performed in several countries, most recently the summer of 2015 in Strasbourg, France.  They will premiere another piece this February, on a concert series presented by the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra.

In addition to the performing and teaching activities, Dunnick is active in service to the trumpet community.  He has served 24 years on the Board of Directors of the International Trumpet Guild, and had the honor of leading the organization as President from 1997-99 and again from 2011-13.  He is currently the Director of the ITG Legacy Endowment Fund.
