Bryn Hughes graduated with the Ph.D in music theory at Florida State University (2011), where he wrote his dissertation, "Harmonic Expectation in Twelve-Bar Blues Progressions," under the direction of Nancy Rogers. He also studied at the University of Western Ontario, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Theory and Composition (2003) and a Master of Arts degree in music theory (2005).
Bryn's research interests include music cognition, popular music analysis, atonal voice leading, and the music of Alfred Schnittke. He has presented papers on atonal music analysis and popular music analysis at the UWO Graduate Student Symposium, the FSU Music Theory Forum, the South Central Society for Music Theory, and Music Theory Southeast. He presented research from his dissertation at the national meeting of Society for Music Perception and Cognition in Indianapolis, Indiana (August 2009), and a paper on Alfred Schnittke’s Concerto for Choir at the national meeting of the Society for Music Theory in Montreal, Quebec (November 2009).
Bryn's teaching experience includes the full range of core undergraduate music theory and aural skills classes. Prior to teaching at Ithaca College, Bryn taught at The University of Western Ontario and at Florida State University, and served as a curriculum writer for Grant MacEwan University. Bryn's dedication and success as a teacher has been recognized both by Florida State University, where he held the College Teaching Fellowship and was an Associate in the competitive Program for Instructional Excellence, and by the University of Western Ontario, where he was nominated for a university-wide teaching assistant award.
